Tiny Tach
« on: December 08, 2013, 07:25:17 PM »
Hi Folks,

I am interested if anyone has installed a Tiny Tach on their boats.  I am considering doing this on My Cyn, as the dial tachometer gave up the ghost.

I am looking for as much info as possible prior to spending the money on a new instrument. Details on installing on a 2-cylinder MD11C would be great.

Happy holidays!

i'd like to pile on some questions as well (only after Bill gets his answer!). my engine dials look as old as the hills. sometimes the tach just doesnt work until i tap it a few times. makes me wonder if the temp and oil indicators actually reflect the true condition they're designed to display.

how difficult/expensive is it to upgrade these dials? does it have to come from the engine manufacturer (volvo penta in my case)? is it the sort of job you need your mechanic to do?

thanks in advance, Mark

I don't know what size you consider "Tiny" but this is a link to one I purchased and put on Chelsea last summer.

She does have an atomic 4 not diesel.  I believe the same tach works on diesel.  When I get back on board in March I can check the materials from the box.  Too much snow to get to her now... An effect of Lake Michigan.

As for the original gauges, Chelsea's seem to remain working well.  I did clean and rebed the fuel gauge last summer now I just have to learn to read it right... oops !  thought she was running out but was 3/4 full...

Hi Folks,

I recently finished replacing the tachometer on My Cyn with a Tiny Tach. Thanks to Walt for his help and expertise!

Check out the write up in the Projects & Tips section under "Electrical and Marine Electronics" heading.

Bill

Thanks for the great job and report.
I have been praying my old  tach holds on, it will fail eventually.
