The Thaw.. but Liberty Harbor Marina is solid ice.
« on: March 09, 2015, 09:06:57 AM »
NY/NJ is finally getting a little break from the deep freeze we've been living in for most of 2015. Stopped by the Marina Saturday to check in on Great Godsea. She's holding in there, although the power is out in the yard and thus my little circulating heater fan is not running in the cabin. batteries still holding a charge. But the marina is SOCKED IN. solid ice. and many of our docks are damaged. They are going to have a lot of work to do getting everything up and running again. attaching a few photos for effect.

Our marina puts out a generous number of Ice-Eaters, so our docks escaped unscathed.

I lucked out and had one placed in the empty slip adjacent to me, so I remained ice-free,
even when things got down into the single digits.

This photo is from the week before last's "weather event".

That is just wrong. I guess there is a plus to being in Southern California. Went sailing last week and it was about 70 with 10-12 knot wind and sunshine. Hope the nice weather comes your way soon. hang in there.

Here it is, the long-awaited first day of spring!

In Maryland, it's snowing like mad outside, with 1-3" predicted. :(

i have less than a month til we put back in... all i need to do is:
engine tune up/realignment
sand and bottom paint
add  new zincs
de-winterize
and then begin the in-water pre season work:
replace jib lines
replace broken teak rub rail
replace boom vang mast attachment
properly seal the mast boot
add new gps mount
try (again) to connect the auto pilot to the gps unit
replace all the various cargo and supplies that we normally jam into the cabin.
hoist up the sails

and then...
i think...
i may be able to start sailing.

can't wait.

Hang in there. Summer will be here soon. I attached a picture sailing back to Los Angeles harbor from Catalina to keep your spirit up. Stay warm.

Wow. That is a beautiful rub rail, and the gel coat is so shiny. I don't think I will ever post a close up of my boat.

It calls for "commitment", if you have that, you get this.

Sadly, that level is not as high on my list of priorities at this time..... maybe some day  :-[

So for now the yard does it's yearly hull waxing for me, and I'm enjoying the natural grey of my rub rail.

Yup. If I spent that much time on my boat, Kathy would have me committed.

My wife wanted to commit me for buying the boat. My top sides were in good shape but the hull gel coat was not very good. I was lucky to find a guy who was willing to sand and revarnish the rails for 500.00. The hull we cleaned as well as we could and used Poli-glow. It has to be redone every couple of years but was pretty economical. This past year year I put a two part varnish that seems to be holding up really well. I did however buy sunbrella covers for all the toe rails. Not cheap, but worth every penny I paid. Make sure if you are going to use poli-glow on the Hull, you understand that if you have the hull repainted in the future, you have to use a poli-strip or the paint will not adhere very well. Make sure to read about the pro and cons before you use Poli-glow. Everyone has an opinion, but my opinion is that it looks good and was really pretty easy after the initial cleaning. Good luck and fair winds

Still frozen in the northland.  Maybe a few weeks of ice yet.
