Putting in new handrails

I am in the process of replacing the handrails on my newly purchased 323 (hull 98). The bolts just spun when I tried to remove them and I couldn't find access to the nuts below. I began by cutting the bolts and letting the nuts nuts fall through to where ever they go. I used a 3/4" tapered bit and drilled the holes out. I then used West System resin and filler to make a paste that I packed into the holes.
I plan to drill into the mount and then secure the handrail with stainless steel screws (probably #14). It seems that this was my best option. I will let you know how I make out. Has anyone else tried this method or something similar?

Hi Wayne,
Glad to see you made it over here!
On our boat, a previous owner had cut holes in the inner cabin liner to get at the nuts, and then through-bolted on the replacements, leaving ugly holes behind with bolt stubs visible. But it's strong.

Ed, I think I will try the screws first. I can always go back and through bolt.

Hi not sure what you did but access to all but the forward 2 bolts is done by removing the headliner. I took your approach and drilled/filled the holes and tapped the holes. So far so good.
