No activity here in two weeks! Thought I'd try a post just to see if the forum is still working!

Well, been busy sailing!
Just installed a max-prop; expensive, but very nice. Getting some noise at low RPMs, possibly cavitation, may have to change the pitch. I hope not. it is a 15x9; and while the pitch can be changed underwater it's a tedious job, especially with the poor visibility we have in the South SF Bay.
In other news, ordered a new boom vang from Garhauer. Just arrived. looks mighty pretty, but is 60" long; the angle it makes to the boom is around 25 degrees (optimal is 37.5), can't see it pulling the boom down at that shallow angle, so I dropped them a little note about it. Also the plate fixing it to the boom is too small - screw are only 1/2" off the centerline - so all the force would be taken on the threads. Bad mojo. Boat nearby had the vang tear out due to a similar issue - so that'll have to be reworked too. <sigh>
On a more positive note, the "blade" I made from a sailrite kit has worked well in the heavy wind season - it is about 85%, and works a treat when the winds are 25+. Long may my shaky seams last.
Finally, we won a race a few weeks ago! Yay! Key was the fact it was mainly broad/beam reaching; if we need to beat we get beat. Perhaps the max-prop will help that, even though it drops the PHRF. We'll see.
Oh boy do I have a long list to work on over winter!!

Spent the weekend on mine, with sleet coming down overnight Friday. I have a couple of posts out there hoping to get answers on. I too thought Mayberry everyone got rid of their 323.

It is easier to post in the winter, although I do pop in once or twice a month during the season. I'd love to hear the final results on the max prop, what affect on both motoring and sailing.

Under power is easy. Under sail is more difficult to measure. Measurements are for a Westerbeke 30B3 diesel:
Fixed 3-blade (13x9 1/2):
RPM Speed (knots)
1500 2.5
2000 3.4
2200 3.8
2400 4.4
2600 4.8
2800 5.0
3000 5.4
Feathering 3-blade (15x9)
RPM Speed (knots)
1500 3.9
2000 5.2
2200 5.5
2400 5.9
2600 6.4
2800 6.6
3000 6.8
Gotta be careful coming into the slip; tending to come in too fast nowadays... ;)

This is what I did last weekend. :-\ This was my first season on Barefoot. I am really happy with the boat. I am impressed at how many complements I get. (on the boat not my sailing) one guy at the marina keeps saying how "salty" it is. Started out in Superior WI but have now moved to a small marina in Bayfield (roys point) right in the midst of the beautyfull apostile Islands on lake superior.
unsalted sailing! but what a short season I had to pull early because of some work commitment but everyone is coming out this month. must be that song about the "gales of November"
if your interisted I have a photo site with some shots from this summer

Nice set of pictures. Thanks.

Sorry for the hijack, but rkfitz asked!
Max-prop update: Subjectively, the improvement in speed under sail is around 0.75-1 knot, similar to what other sailors said I should expect.
The improvement in pointing also appears to be dramatic; I think the drag of the fixed 3-blade prop was resulting in more leeway (given our shorter keel).
A few days ago, 10-15 knot wind, beam reach, we were at about 7 knots. With the old prop, I would have been around 6.
Early days, but looks promising.

Thanks for the update!
