General Discussion / Winch handle? Newbie question

Hullo! I'm trying to buy a present for one of your fellow Pearson 323 owners. I know nothing about boats, however, and am looking for expert advice. 
Specifically I am hoping to buy one of the "handle things" you put into, I believe, the winch to tighten the sails. Where would I buy such a thing and what exactly is it called? He lives in Miami. I'm in NYC.
